  2. Practice at home every day for a minimum of 15-20 minutes each day.  Practice all current music.  Spend more time on difficult passages, but also spend time playing completely through each song.
  3. Have your instrument repaired as soon as a problem occurs.  Your Band Director may be able to help you with this.
  4. If you play a reed instrument, keep a good supply of reeds on hand – at least six for single reed instruments or two for double reed instruments.
  5. Take private lessons if possible.  Ask your Band Director for recommendations.
  6. If your band book includes a practice CD, use it!  Listen for tone, rhythm, and pitch.  Try to imitate what you hear.
  7. Attend concerts given by local symphonies, colleges, and/or high schools.  Pay special attention to those who are playing your instrument.
  8. Maintain your instrument with great care.  When you need to set it down, use an instrument stand or lay it in its case.  Never lay an instrument across a music stand or chair or set it on its bell.
  9. Clean your instrument on a regular basis.  Most instruments need routine cleaning after each playing session, plus additional cleaning once per week.
  10. HAVE FUN!  Enjoy your instrument for years to come.
